For Rockledge, Florida native Zachary Thomas Kelly, the days are not going to get any easier from this point forward after he was charged with felony animal cruelty for biting the ears of a puppy. Before he was taken into custody, Kelly, 30, said that his reasons for injuring the small pup had primarily to do with his behavior, or as he told officers specifically, “it was acting up..I had to do it,” according to the police report filed in the case.
According to a spokesperson with the Rockledge Police Department, officers were called to Kelly’s home after his brother called emergency services, to tend to a bite wound on his chest allegedly inflicted by Kelly.
Kelly’s brother reportedly told officers that Kelly had fled the scene just as they arrived, and had been smoking drugs, and drinking a volatile mix of beer and liquor. Officers soon spotted Kelly driving after a description of his vehicle was driving, and a 100 mph high-speed chase ensued.
Kelly was eventually cornered, arrested, and charged with multiple offenses that included driving under the influence (DUI), domestic assault and battery, and the felony charge of animal cruelty.
As he was being led to the squad car, an inebriated Kelly reportedly shouted: “this is about the dog isn’t it?”
